Accountable Asset Return: UK Country Level Civil Society Report

Publication

In December 2017, the USA and UK co-host the Global Forum on Asset Recovery (GFAR) – a meeting of practitioners and policy experts focusing on assistance to Nigeria, Ukraine, Tunisia, and Sri Lanka. This paper sets out the strengths and weaknesses of the UK asset recovery system, analyses cases relevant to GFAR countries, and makes recommendations for improvement.

Hiding in Plain Sight: How UK companies are used to launder corrupt wealth” identified 52 global corruption and money laundering cases involving 766 UK companies. It found that the UK is home to a thriving company formation industry which gives money launderers access to UK firms. The UK’s system to defend against this is failing to prevent the abuse of UK companies.
