21st March, London - Responding to the “Global Laundromat” revelations from the OCCRP and the Guardian, Duncan Hames, Director of Policy at Transparency International UK said:

“We have been saying for years that the UK’s anti-money laundering system is not fit for purpose. Now we have more evidence of how these weaknesses are being exploited to move eye-watering amounts of illicit wealth with impunity. If the UK is serious about ending its role as a safe haven for corrupt money, there must be extensive changes as part of a wide-ranging anti-corruption strategy, which is now overdue. Piecemeal reforms like those announced last week, may only apply sticking plasters to the problem.”
